Description

The Automation Engine Client applications like Automation Engine Pilot, Shuttle, Diagnostics and Script Runner need a Java Runtime Environment (JRE).  When you have installed these applications from ServerAdmin on Mac, they will use the Java 1.6 Runtime Environment provided by Apple.

However, Apple has stopped the development of Java Runtime Environment. Newer versions are provided by Oracle

Starting from Automation Engine 16, you can run the above Automation Engine Client applications using an embedded Java Runtime Environment 1.8 from Oracle.

Procedure

Follow the steps given below to install the Automation Engine Client Applications with embedded JRE 8:

  1. Open your internet browser.

  2. Type http://<AutomationEngineHost>:9999 (Replace <AutomationEngineHost> by the name of the computer where Automation Engine is installed).

  3. Click the Download button while pressing the ALT key. The text of the Download button will change into Download (JRE 8).

  4. Install Automation Engine Client (JRE 8) 16.0.dmg.

  5. Click /Applications/Automation Engine Client 16.0/Pilot to run the Pilot using JRE 8.

  6. Click /Applications/Automation Engine Client 16.0/Shuttle to run the Shuttle Pilot using JRE 8.

  7. Click /Applications/Automation Engine Client 16.0/Tools/Diagnostics to run Diagnostics using JRE 8.

Follow the steps given below to install the Automation Engine Script Runner with embedded JRE 8:

  1. Open your internet browser.

  2. Type http://<AutomationEngineHost>:9999 (Replace <AutomationEngineHost> by the name of the computer where Automation Engine is installed).

  3. Click Tools.

  4. Click the Download button while pressing the ALT key. The text of the Download button will change into Download (JRE 8).

  5. Install Automation Engine Script Runner (JRE 8) 16.0.0.dmg.

  6. Click /Applications/Automation Engine Script Runner 16.0.0/Script Runner Preferences to run the Script Runner Preference application using JRE 8.

Known issues

The list below is an incomplete list of known issues when using the Java Runtime Environment 8 from Oracle. These issues are related to shortcomings in the Oracle JRE itself.

  • Graphic rendering is slower: Apple used Quartz for graphic rendering in its JRE, while the Oracle JRE 8 version is based on OpenGL, which seems slower.
  • The maximize button of windows is not always working as expected.
  • The cursor does not change when going over a split window after a modal dialog box is opened. You can get around this by moving the mouse pointer outside the Pilot Windows and then go in again.
  • Font anti-aliasing is less good.
  • When restarting the Pilot, the sizes of the different windows are reset to defaults. This happens only when closing the Pilot in maximized view.
  • Many more but cosmetic issues.
