Automation Engine Pilot on Mac OSX goes out of memory.

In the Pilot log file, you can see the following information:

"AWT-EventQueue-0 - java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space".

Since Automation Engine 16.1, Esko is not defining the amount of memory the Pilot can use and allows Java to choose the amount of memory it can take.

To see the Maximum heap size that Java can take, check the value of MaxHeapSize

on Mac

java -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -version | grep -iE 'heapsize|permsize|threadstacksize'

on PC

java -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -version | findstr /i "HeapSize PermSize ThreadStackSize"

Install the Pilot JRE 1.8 version. This seems to have a better memory management:

  1. Uninstall Automation Engine Pilot 16.x by removing the folder "Automation Engine Pilot 16.x "in Applications.
  2. Open your Web browser and browse to http:\\AEServer.
  3. Click the Client Apps tab.
  4. Press the Alt key when you hover over the download icon. The icon will change to Download (JRE8).

In Automation Engine 16.1.1 the default version is JRE8, Alt key is version JRE6!

  5. Install the Pilot.

In the Automation Engine 18, only Java 1.8 will be used.
