Sometimes it is convenient to know the effect of a proofing device link, without having to rip a test job and open the ripped file in an editor to measure.

To find out the effect of a proofing device link, proceed as follows:

Step 1: Create two Windows Environment variables:

  • KSCOPE_EXPERIMENTAL with value 1
  • KSCOPE_ADVANCED with value 1

To create the Environment variables, do the following:

  1. In Windows 7, right-click My computer and go to Properties > Advanced system settings. This opens System Properties window.
  2. Click Advanced > Environment Variables....
  3. Click the New... button in the User variables for section.
  4. Enter KSCOPE_EXPERIMENTAL as the Variable and 1 as the Value.
  5. Again click New... and create the variable KSCOPE_ADVANCED with value 1.

Step2:

  1. In the Color Engine Pilot, go to Tools > Device Link View. This opens the Device Link View window.
  2. Select the Preview saved Device Link radio button and select your device link from the Device Link: drop-down list.
  3. On the right hand side, type the Input values for which you want to see the color management conversion.

This is often used to demonstrate, test and investigate the effect of black generation. By making several device links with different black generation parameters, one can see the difference between no black mappings, keep black as black, minimal black and single color black.
