When installing ArtiosCAD 12.1.1, the first part of installation is installing SQL Express 2012. If .NET Framework 3.5 is not activated in the Windows Features, SQL installation will fail.

Often, activating the feature .NET Framework 3.5 will fail as well.

Most documentation indicates that the Windows installation media will be needed to correct this issue.

This article explains how to activate .NET Framework 3.5 WITHOUT having the Windows installation media.

Standard Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 does not have .NET Framework 3.5 activated.

Trying to enable it via Control Panel > Turn Windows features on or off > Download files from Windows Update might fail as well.

  1. In the Search area, go to Group Policy and select Edit group policy.
  2. Go to Administrative Templates > System > Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair.
You will see that it is set to 'Disabled'.
  3. Double-click it, or click the Edit policy setting.
    1. Select the Enabled radio button.
    2. Select the Contact Windows Update directly download repair content instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) check box.
    3. Click Apply and then click the OK button.
  4. Now go back to Control Panel > Turn Windows features on or off and activate .NET Framework 3.5.
  5. Run the SQL installer again.

You may wish to revert these settings after the ArtiosCAD installation is completed depending on your network configuration.
