Summary

ArtPro file exported as Normalized PDF with embedded images is opened in Adobe® Illustrator®.

With DeskPack Image Extractor, it is possible to export images only as Esko CT and TIFF, not as DCS2.0 and Photoshop DCS2.0.

Symptoms

1. ArtPro file: File contains mask in Process Black

  • Export Normalized PDF with embedded images and No Esko Links
  • Open the PDF as ESKO PDF in Adobe® Illustrator®
  • Image Extractor shows only two image file types: Esko CT and TIFF

2. ArtPro file: File contains mask in spot color

  • Export Normalized PDF with embedded images and No Esko Links
  • Open the PDF as ESKO PDF in Adobe® Illustrator®
  • Image Extractor shows all four image file types: DCS2.0, Photoshop DCS2.0, Esko CT and TIFF

Solution

In the 1st normalized PDF, after import into AI, it's found that the "feather" is created by a CMYK image and a gray scale image as opacity mask.

In the 2nd normalized PDF, after import into AI, it's found that the "feather" is created by a CMYK image and a single channel spot color image as opacity mask.

As per the current logic of AI Image Extractor, for the 1st case, gray scale will be treated as transparency (alpha) channel. This is not supported by DCS2.0.

For the 2nd case, the Image Extractor will extract CMYK image and the spot color image in two different files.

Workaround

Use mask in spot color instead of Process Black in ArtPro.

The spot color must contain 100% Black, otherwise the image will look different (see screenshot)
