The following are the minimum system requirements for Imaging Engine 18.1 Powered by Adobe®. Exceeding these requirements will in most cases lead to a performance increase. Running Imaging Engine Powered by Adobe® on a system that does not meet these requirements is not supported.
Information on additional Imaging Engine Tools
The following tools can also be installed on the same system:
- Curve Pilot (which can include PressSync Pilot and/or Print Control Wizard)
- HDFlexo Screens
- Screen Manager
- Bitmap Viewer (32-bit or 64-bit)
You can also install these tools on a separate system, see here for the minimum system requirement for these tools.
Minimum requirements
Minimum System Requirements for Imaging Engine 18.1.0 Powered by Adobe® | |
---|---|
Processor type and speed | Only 64 bit Intel® compatible processor, minimal 4 logical cores per worker + 4 logical cores for the OS (= 8 logical cores in case of 1 worker). Intel® CPU We've only tested on Intel® CPU's, not on "non-Intel" but they are assumed to be compatible Number of workers The number of workers you can configure for Imaging Engine is determined by the license you have and by the number of cores/processors on the server. So even if you have a license for 4 workers, you need at least 4 cores. "logical cores" means:
Hyperthreading enabled can result in more performance, but it could also cause problems when you are at the limit of using all cores. In this case we advise to disable Hyperthreading. Clock speed: minimum 2 GHz - recommended 3 GHz |
RAM | Minimum 8 GB for the OS + 8 GB RAM per worker (e.g. 16 GB RAM in case of 1 worker - 40 GB RAM in case of 4 workers). For more info about memory limitations in Windows operating systems, please consult this table. |
Hard disk |
|
Network | 100/1000 Base-T Ethernet, TCP/IP v4 protocol, TCP/IP v6 protocol is not supported. |
Graphics and video | Minimum 1280 x 1024 screen resolution, true color depth. |
Virtualization |
Hardware connections, including dongles, proofers, spectrophotometers and others may work, but are not supported. Customers should verify hardware support through their virtualization support channels. |
File servers | All Esko applications running on Windows OS can use data that is available on network shares. These shares need to be on Windows file servers. We recommend to use Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019 as file server. As only Windows file servers are supported, Mac OS X or Unix/Linux (CIFS/SMB or NFS) data servers for instance are not supported (including many Network Attached Storage units). |
Setup Guideline in relation to Automation Engine and Proof Server
Versions
- Imaging Engine and Automation Engine must run exactly the same version (e.g. 18.1.1).
- Proof Server must run a similar version as Automation Engine (e.g. 18.1.*)
One server or different servers?
Imaging Engine and Automation Engine
We advise to install Automation Engine and Imaging Engine on separate machines. Check the system requirements for both products.
Imaging Engine and Imaging Engine Pilot
Imaging Engine Pilot is actually a lightweight Automation Engine with 2 processing channels. It can be run on the same machine as Imaging Engine but the properties of the system should at least provide the sum of what both products require with regard to the amount of processor cores and RAM.
Imaging Engine and the Proof Server
In case of heavy load on the Proof Server we advise to install the Proof server on a separate machine. If you decide to install both the Proof Server and the Imaging Engine on the same machine then first check the Imaging Engine system requirements to make sure minimum 2 extra cores (and preferably 4) are available for the Proof Server on top of what Imaging Engine needs.
Proof Server connectivity problems
To avoid connectivity issues we advise to install the Proof Server on the same PC as the Automation Engine Server (Additionally you must execute workaround 2 as described in this KB: KB172026546: FlexProofE/PackProof - Proof Server Application stops after start up).
Supported Operating Systems
Recommended operating systems are highlighted in green in the tables below.
If an operating system is not listed in the tables below, it is not supported. Do not try to install Imaging Engine Powered by Adobe® on a computer running an unsupported operating system.

Windows Server 2008 R2 (all editions) is no longer supported for new installations as of Imagine Engine 18.0.1
Upgrading an existing Imagine Engine Server to Imagine Engine 18.1 is still possible on Windows Server 2008 R2, but this will become unsupported soon as well.
Additional Supported Operating Systems for Pack Proof
Pack Proof is a version of Imaging Engine that is sold specifically for proofing only solutions. Because Pack Proof is a more restricted version, it can be supported on the "workstation" versions of Windows that are listed below. The full Imaging Engine Server is only supported on the "server" versions of Windows that are listed above.

Additional Supported Operating Systems for Imaging Engine for CDI
Imaging Engine for CDI is a version of Imaging Engine that is sold specifically along with the CDI and is designed just for that purpose. The Imaging Engine for CDI can drive only one device using LEN format, processing only one job concurrently. Because Imaging Engine for CDI is a more restricted version, it can be supported on the "workstation" versions of Windows that are listed below. The full Imaging Engine Server is only supported on the "server" versions of Windows that are listed above.
