Summary

System does not run properly. A lot of tasks fail with "System error 5". In case of PackEdge or Plato, the application does not start properly and you cannot create new documents.

Symptoms

This error can occur on Automation Engine Server when you launch some tasks (example: Step&Repeat task, Normalization task, Export Tasks...).

On Automation Engine server:

Tasks fail with error "System error 5", typically in the log file you will see the following errors:

...Unhandled Exception: Illegal value used as index
in fnt_fonts::helveticaname at line 1246 of file "C:\Esko\bg_prog_fastserver_v120\dtl{color}font_dto_interface.dtt"
Unhandled Exception: Wrong number or type of arguments for call to "symbol"
in hyph_hyphenationsetup::reset at line 81 of file "C:\Esko\bg_prog_fastserver_v120\dtl{color}lwbrix{color}stl_engine.dtt"
Entered stage "Reading \\fileserver\ServerDisk 3-Products-\103018\142400\Report\142400.pdf"

On Editors (example: PackEdge):

Connection to the server fails. The application does not run properly, you cannot create new documents and "System error 5" appears upon starting. The debug VDTL shell indicates that there is problem with font_dto, stl_engine too.

Another important symptom of this problem is that in the central font directory (bg_data_fonts_v040), the fontdb.dat file is gone.

Solution

Repairing fonts (via Engines installation DVD) should solve this issue. Follow the steps given below to do this:

You will receive a warning to save your work because the server will be stopped during repair.
  1. Insert the Suite_12_ENG_INSTALL DVD.

  2. The Software Installation window appears after the autorun.

  3. Select the language. Click Software Installation > Repair or reinstall your Suite 12 software.

  4. Click Repair/re-install installed Suite 12 Engines components in the next screen.

  5. Click the Next button in the Esko Suite 12 Engines - Repair dialog.

  6. Select the Font Data 1.0 checkbox. Click Next and follow the instructions to complete the repair.

To avoid this problem in the future, you should install Hotfix 51.
We suggest customers to upgrade to Automation Engine 12.0.1 (Assembly 2).
