Summary

When creating custom menus, it is possible to add menu items normally restricted to specific user groups, such as Create Project or Create User, and make them visible to regular users as well by modifying the Visible to setting. The menu item will be visible to a normal user when the menu is assigned, however the user will not be able to perform actions he/she is not allowed to. Instead, the user will be redirected to another page.

Symptoms

When a user tries to access a specific page from a (custom) menu, instead of going to the page, he/she is redirected to the Homepage or My Work page.

The user's profile shows the following:

  • The user is a Normal User (not a Project Manager).
  • The user has been assigned a custom menu, either in the user profile, or through the user's company.

Solution

Follow these steps to correct the issue:

  1. Modify your menu definition so that actions such as Create Project are only visible to the user type they are supposed to.

  2. Save the changed menu definition.
  3. Optionally, change the user type of the user that ran into the problem. For example, if this user actually needs to be able to create projects, the user should be a Project Manager.

A user needs to log off and log on again to see any changes done to the menu definition.
