Question

What needs to be backed-up in WebCenter to be on the safe side in case of disaster and / or as preparation for a migration?

Answer:

The following are the key components of WebCenter that must be backed-up in order to fully restore when needed.

  1. WebCenter4_0 Database

    • Steps to properly backup are listed here: Backing up the WebCenter Database
      • This should be backed up on a daily basis

      • The database cannot be locked in any way during backup procedures, otherwise WebCenter will stop responding and all WebCenter services will need to be restarted.

  2. Filestore share

    • The full \\servername\Filestore folder needs to be backed up. Location will vary per customer.

      • This should be backed up on a daily basis

Database Filestore alignement

It is important that the FileStore is backed-up at the same date/time as the Database. Otherwise there is risk of the Database and Filestore being out of sync resulting in possible data corruption.

  1. Web Server Instance customizations

    • <Install Drive>:\Esko\Artios\WebCenter\WebServer\tomcat\webapps\[InstanceName]\custom

      • Backups are needed when the instances are initially created and after each modification.

  2. Application Server Notification customizations

    • <Install Drive>:\Esko\Artios\WebCenter\ApplicationServer\EmailNotifications\custom

      • Backups are needed when they are initially created and after each modification.
  3. OBGE Configuration and Database

    • Steps to properly backup are listed here:

There is no content with the specified labels

      • If the OBGE was installed on the Application Server, then its application and configuration only needs to be backed up after initial installation, upgrades, or when changes are made to the configuration files.
      • If using a Production Automation Engine server rather than the OBGE (which is NOT recommended but is possible), its database should be backed up daily, if not several times per day.
  4. AppConfig.xml

    • C:\Artios\WebCenter\Config

      • Backups are needed after each install and upgrade.

  5. Standalone.xml

    • <Install Drive>:\Esko\Artios\WebCenter\ApplicationServer\Jboss\server\default\configuration

    • <Install Drive>:\Esko\Artios\WebCenter\ApplicationServer\Jboss\server\alternate\configuration

      • Backups are needed after each install and upgrade.

  6. WCInstall.log (Optional)

    • C:\WCInstall.log

      • Backups are needed after each install and upgrade.

This link explains a solid Example Backup Plan.

If possible, one could virtualize the environment running WebCenter.
This would allow you to create regular snapshots, which can purpose as fall backs when needed.

More info on virtualization can be found in the system requirements: WebCenter System Requirements - Product overview page
