Question

  • How can I use the Groups filter in the Menu Builder to limit visibility of a menu item to the members of a specific group?
  • I have limited visibility of a certain menu item to a group, but the menu item is not displayed. How do I make this work?

Answer

Using the Menu Builder, it is possible to set up a menu that show different menu items, depending on which groups a user is in.

In case a user is a member of one group, he will see menu items that are visible to his own group and menu items that are visible to multiple groups including his own group. In case a user is a member of two groups, he will see menu items that are visible to either of the two groups and menu items that are visible to multiple groups including one of those groups.

To adapt an existing menu:

  1. Go to the Admin section.
  2. Choose Preferences > Menus from the main menu.
  3. Click a Menu Name to open it.
  4. Click the Menu Item you wish to modify.

  5. In the Visible To section, enable the Groups checkbox and enter a group name.

You will always need to combine the Groups setting with one of the other options. For example: Select both All Users and Groups to display your menu for all users in your specified group. Select both Project Managers and Groups to display your menu for only project managers that are members of your specified group.
  6. You can add multiple groups in the Groups field.

In this example, a user who is a member op Group1 will see:

A user who is a member of both Group1 and Group2, will see:
