Question

How can I check if my barcode is still live/editable and how can I prevent it from getting outlined?

Answer

How can I check if my barcode is still live/editable

There are four ways to check if your barcode is still live:

1. Simply double-click on your barcode with the Select tool. If the barcode is still live, the barcode Edit palette should automatically pop-up at this point.

2. Open the Barcode palette (via Separations palette > last tab). If the barcode is still live, the Code and Type of the barcode should be visible in the list. If the barcode is outlined, this list will be empty.

3. Select the barcode and check the Layers palette. If the barcode is still live, the object name should be called 'Barcode (barcode type) (e.g. EAN13)'. If the barcode is outlined, the object name will state 'Group'.

LIVE/EDITABLE VS OUTLINED

4. Select the barcode and check the Object Parameters palette. If the barcode is still live, the object name should be called 'Barcode (barcode type) (e.g. EAN13)'. If the barcode is outlined, the object name will state 'Group'.

How to prevent your barcode to get outlined:

Some customers prefer to have the barcode text closer to the bars. This has always been possible but as of ArtPro12.1.2, modifying the code will no longer reset the position. More about this added functionality can be found here.

But, when you are moving the position of the barcode text, please keep in mind to move the text closer to or further away from the bars and not the other way around. Moving the bars will break/outline the barcode, so you will not be able to modify it anymore.

To select the bars and barcode text separately, make sure to disable this option in the Edit Preferences.

All other editing actions should not have an impact on the barcode.

When you export a file that contains a barcode and you import that file again into ArtPro, the barcode will also be outlined. This is for both Normalized PDF and PDF for PRESS.
