KB170033768: WebCenter - Signed Java Applets blocked: "Your security settings have blocked an application signed with an expired or not-yet-valid certificate from running"

Summary

You cannot open Signed Java applets anymore because the Esko certificate has expired on April 20th, 2015.

Symptoms

When you try to open your Upload Multiple Documents Applet, your Workflow Applet (via Task Type or in a Project), your Java Viewer and/or 3D Collada Viewer, you see the following error:

"com.sun.deploy.security.BlockedException: Your security settings have blocked an application signed with an expired or not-yet-valid certificate from running"

The following versions are affected for each component:

Workaround

1. Open the Java applet you want to see.
2. In the contextual menu of the Java icon in System tray, click Open the Java Control Panel.
   
   1. If the icon is not there after performing step 1, follow the instructions on http://www.java.com/en/download/help/javaconsole.xml. Restart your browser and redo step 1 and 2.
3. Go to the Security tab.
4. Click Edit Site List....
5. Click Add and enter the URL of your WebCenter site, for example: https://webcenter.esko.com.
6. Click OK twice.
7. Restart your browser. You need to make sure the Java Virtual Machine is restarted, otherwise you might have to force quit it first via your Task Manager.
8. Afterwards, you should be able to run the applets after a security prompt:
   

Alternatively, upgrade to WebCenter 14.x to have a working Workflow and Java Applet.
