Summary

A custom Web Server instance is not reachable outside LAN in case the instance folder is not shared or hidden.

For example, the default instance http(s)://[MyCompanyURL]/WebCenter_Inst is reachable inside and outside the company's LAN, but http(s)://[MyCompanyURL]/[CustomInstance] is not.

For more information on creating custom WebCenter instances, see: Deploying WebCenter.

Symptoms

  • The default WebCenter instance can be reached, both in and outside the company network.
  • The custom WebCenter instance cannot be accessed outside LAN / company network.
  • The Troubleshooting Tool in WebCenter returns good results for both the default and custom instances.
  • The custom instance is created in IIS (on Web Server) and the IIS service is running.

Solution

This issue can occur when the dedicated folder for the custom instance is not accessible. For this reason, users outside the company's network cannot access it and users inside the LAN can.

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Logon as a system administrator on the Web Server.
  2. Navigate to: <root>:\Artios\WebCenter\WebServer\tomcat\webapps\webcenter\[CustomInstance].
  3. Check the Properties on this folder. In case the folder is hidden, unhide it. In case the folder is not shared, share it.
  4. Try again (Tomcat service restart not required).
